When looking back on the deep roots of dubstep, Mala is an undisputedly essential spark that started the now billowing, bass heavy fire. The Croydon producer, DJ and label owner began spreading this message from South London in the early ‘00s, when the dubstep scene was a tiny, ignored community of likeminded individuals, committed to exploring and spreading these fresh, powerful subsonic frequencies. His music was first cut to dubplate and played by fellow pioneer DJ Hatcha, and subsequently released on Hatcha's label Big Apple Records. As dubstep's distinct style began to flow and gain footing in the underground music scene, the DMZ label was born in order to continue pushing the burgeoning, infectious sound on vinyl. Those records are now viewed as foundational dubstep milestones and Mala himself is held with the utmost respect as one of the sound's original forefathers, not only by those who have been personally touched by his music, but by anyone who is educated in the history of the genre and holds a deep passion for various styles of dubstep.
Accompanying Mala on Deep Medi's 10 Year Anniversary lineup is Gorgon Sound, a strictly dubplate and vinyl operated reggae project made up of Bristol producers and selectors Kahn & Neek, that radiates their city's famous heritage of sound system music with its own unique style. The event's special guest, Om Unit, has assumed a significant, pioneering presence in various dance music circles by traversing genres and scenes in search of sonic tropes to meticulously cross-breed and re-imagine. Mixed with his extreme drive to challenge himself musically, Om Unit has distilled various influences from hip-hop, dubstep, ambient, jungle and footwork, into a fluid and refreshing take on sound system culture that fuses the ideal aspects of each genre to create new potentials for exploration and inspiration. Lastly, B-Side's own badman, Indica, is considered an important grounding member in LA's current underground dubstep scene. With his record bag and USB always in hand and ready at a moment's notice, his vast selection of diverse, bass heavy styles is always poised to set the right vibe for the night and keep the crowd's feet moving.
As LA's truest bass heads come together through a shared love of dubstep to celebrate 10 years and 100 releases of Deep Medi Musik, we will collectively be urged to not only pay homage to the individuals and label that fostered a sound that changed electronic music forever, but to acknowledge how far the passionate, thriving life of the underground dubstep genre has come from its dark, dingy roots in Croydon, England. Since Deep Medi Musik's inception a decade ago, the label has cemented an unprecedented place for itself in dubstep history, and firmly stands as a thriving haven for discovering and nurturing some of the most exciting, innovative and prominent names in dubstep today. Their events, stemming back to their first DMZ club nights with Digital Mystikz (Mala and Coki), Loefah and SGT Pokes, are intimate, authentic and beaming with a sense of community that lives and breathes the sound system culture. With that said, during B-Side's Deep Medi 10 Year Anniversary show, expect exclusives, dubplates and subsonic frequencies that exude raw emotion, all supported by a heavyweight sound system.
